Garden Design Ideas : How To Get More From Your Outside Space.

Whether you have large landscapes or a pocket-sized oasis, a considered garden design will really help you maximise the use and enjoyment of your outdoor space...

1) Make a plan:

Creating a garden design upfront, instead of making physical changes as you go along, is a game-changing step 1. It can help you really consider the space, who will use it and how you'll use it, meaning you can factor in function as well as style.

Do you want a place to grow-your-own, an oasis to relax in, a social entertaining space?  Once you know your goals, you can start to figure how to achieve them.

How much space do you have to work with? Is your garden sunny or shady? These factors will all impact the final layout of your garden. It's also a good idea to consider any level changes or established trees too...

2) The magic of a zone...

Traditional British gardens tend to consist of a central lawn and/or patio framed with flowerbeds; something to be 'looked at'. Creating defined areas for socialising, relaxation & play can help maximise your space & give everyone their area to really use and enjoy. Using planters, fencing, paving and outdoor furniture you can create anything from your own wellness corner or outdoor exercise area to a sheltered reading nook or wide open space for kids and pets to play.

3) Love your small spaces too...

If your outside is too small to 'zone' decide on what you'll do most there and really embrace it. For readers & social folk try creating a focal point to gather around such as a fire pit or garden sculpture, and build in comfortable seating. Love cooking & eating outside? Make your own outdoor restaurant with a large table & chairs and frame with narrow planters to house climbing trellis plants. You could even give over your whole space to a hot tub or splash pool, or growing-your-own with raised beds for vegetable and herbs.

4) Invest in infrastructure

Utilising built in-seating, fencing, pergolas, pathways and summer houses/home offices can really help you use the garden in more ways ( and in all weathers)...There are many stylish and affordable solutions available from the UK's favourite DIY stores nowadays.

5) Get expert help.

Getting a trained designer to take your wish-list and craft a concept plan is win win.Your ideas are brought to life & you have an expert in utilising space, providing imaginative solutions and considering factors such as aspect and location. Whether it's a straightforward layout, or a complex problem-solver (like the steep incline garden pictured) having a seasoned pro on hand will help transform your outdoor space into something special...
