3 Reasons To Design Your Garden In Autumn...

by Jenni Page on Aug 28, 2024

If you've been staring at a blank patch of grass all summer and think you’ve missed the boat on a garden makeover, stop right there!

Read on for 3 great reasons why designing your garden in Autumn is a great idea...

1) Design for all seasons…

Creating a garden design upfront is a game changer. It will help you really consider the space, who will use it and how you'll use it, so you can be sure it functions AND looks great.

We tend to focus on Spring and Summer when thinking about our gardens. Designing in Autumn can help you imagine how you could use it through the cooler months too.

Think about the positions of beds and planters (& what may go in them to give you interesting views from the house all year around). Consider covered outdoor spaces, plan pathways and the position of any sheds or garden rooms to allow easy access in wet and muddy weather...you're likely to plan the space differently at this time of year!

2) Spread the cost & schedule of work -

By creating your plan now you can start a schedule and break up the work over a few months. This leads to less disruption, time for things to settle, and maybe even allow fresh ideas to bloom.  Most importantly, it will mean you can spread the cost, meaning you might be able to splash out on more plants or accessories later on...

3) Extend your garden time with some quick autumn wins…

  • Buy or build a fire pit area & comfortable seating, you can cosy up as the evenings draw in with snacks and hot drinks.
  • Install covered areas with wooden structures or retractable awnings and continue to enjoy a cuppa in the fresh air & autumn colours…
  • Invest in outdoor lighting to prolong evening socials, think festoon lights, solar lamps, and uplighting in beds (which will also create beautiful leaf-pattern shadows).

It can also be a good idea to get paths and patios built in ‘garden downtime’. This type of work is likely to trample any existing lawn, so it’s good to get it done now and allow the grass to recover through Spring…

With your design finalised & paths & seating areas taken care of you can book in any landscaping, returfing and planting for the Spring…
